The road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup became clearer on Friday after competing nations learned their group-stage opponents during the tournament draw in Washington, D.C.—an event prominently dominated by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Held at the Kennedy Center, the ceremony featured the inaugural presentation of FIFA’s new peace prize to President Trump before officials unveiled the groupings for the first-ever 48-team World Cup. The expanded format delivered favourable opening paths for defending champions Argentina and European titleholders Spain.
While the group allocations and potential knockout routes were confirmed, FIFA announced that the full match schedule—including venues and kick-off times—would be released on Saturday. FIFA President Gianni Infantino is expected to provide the detailed timetable at 1700 GMT, giving teams just over six months to finalize their preparations before the tournament opens on June 11.
Argentina, Spain Receive Favourable Starts
Lionel Messi’s Argentina will open their campaign in Group J, facing Algeria, Austria, and World Cup debutants Jordan.
Spain, champions of Europe, were drawn into Group H and will begin against first-time qualifiers Cape Verde before matches against Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
“We want to do something big at this World Cup,” said Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente. “That means performing well in the group stage and building from there.”
England, France Draw Testing Groups
Thomas Tuchel’s England landed in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana, and Panama, with expectations high for the 1966 champions to finish top.
Two-time winners France face a tricky assignment in Group I, joining Senegal and Norway—led by star striker Erling Haaland—along with a play-off winner from Iraq, Bolivia, or Suriname.
For the first time, FIFA structured the draw to keep the top four ranked nations—Argentina, Spain, France, and England—apart until the semi-finals, provided they all win their groups.
Potential Knockout Clashes Loom
The expanded tournament format introduces an extra knockout round after the group stage, creating a more precarious path to the latter stages.
If top seeds prevail:
England could face co-hosts Mexico in the round of 16, Brazil in the quarter-finals, and Argentina in the semi-finals.
France and Germany may meet as early as the round of 16.
A blockbuster quarter-final between Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo remains a possibility.
“You cannot get carried away with who you might meet,” Tuchel cautioned. “You just focus on the group.”
Co-hosts and Match Venues
The 2026 World Cup will take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19. The U.S. will host the majority of matches, including the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, while Mexico will stage three venues and Canada two.
Mexico will feature in the opening match against South Africa at Mexico City’s historic Estadio Azteca.
Despite past tensions between the host nations, Trump struck a conciliatory tone after receiving his award, saying: “The coordination and friendship among our countries has been outstanding.”

“Our first game is the final of the World Cup,” U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino said. “That is the mindset we want to build.”
The top two teams from each group and the eight best third-placed sides will advance to the round of 32.
Infantino hailed the expanded tournament, declaring: “It will be the greatest World Cup ever—like 104 Super Bowls in one month.”
