Sanwo-Olu Marks New Year with Church, Mosque Prayers

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed optimism that 2026 will be a “glorious” year for Lagos State and Nigeria, urging citizens to remain steadfast in faith and supportive of ongoing efforts to address the country’s challenges.

The governor spoke on New Year’s Day during a thanksgiving service at the State House Chapel, Marina, after which he also joined Muslim faithful at a mosque for special prayers to mark the beginning of the year.

Sanwo-Olu prayed for divine guidance for the nation and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, calling on Nigerians to support the President’s bold reforms aimed at tackling Nigeria’s social and economic difficulties.

“Lagos will continue to make progress. It shall be well with all citizens; 2026 will be a glorious year,” the governor said.

Reflecting on leadership and public service, Sanwo-Olu noted the transient nature of political office, adding that perseverance and prayer were essential in the face of challenges. He reaffirmed his belief in a better future for the country, saying Nigeria would emerge stronger.

At the mosque, the governor urged workers to remain dedicated and committed, while also offering prayers for the President, his family and all Nigerians.

The New Year’s service at the State House Chapel was attended by senior government officials, junior staff and members of the public. The sermon was delivered by Dr Bukola Oluwagbemiga, Director of Postgraduate Studies at Life Theological Seminary, Ikorodu, who emphasised reliance on God at all times, drawing from Psalm 121 and John 10:27–30. He also encouraged the governor and state officials to create room for divine guidance in governance.

During the Muslim prayers, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Affairs (Muslim), Dr Abdullahi Jebe, urged worshippers to shun hypocrisy and work together in unity.

Prayers were also offered for the Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, members of the executive, legislature and judiciary, as well as for the successful implementation of the THEMES Plus Agenda, the welfare of civil servants, a peaceful Nigeria and a greater Lagos State.
