The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled January 7, 2026, to deliver its ruling on bail applications filed by former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, SAN, his wife Hajia Bashir Asabe, and their son, Abubakar Abdulaziz.
Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned the matter on Friday after counsel to the defendants, Joseph Daudu, SAN, and the prosecuting team from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), led by Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, adopted their written addresses and presented oral arguments for and against the bail requests.
The trio is standing trial in case FHC/ABJ/CR/700/2025, in which the EFCC named Malami, his wife, and son as the first, second, and third defendants over alleged money laundering offences.
The anti-graft agency claims the defendants engaged in multiple suspicious financial transactions and attempted to conceal the illicit origin of billions of naira through various bank accounts and property acquisitions in Abuja, Kano, and Kebbi states.
According to the EFCC, the alleged offences occurred between 2015 and 2025, covering Malami’s eight-year tenure as AGF under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. The commission further accused the defendants of conspiring to disguise the source of funds, indirectly acquiring properties, and retaining sums they allegedly knew were proceeds of unlawful activities, in violation of the Money Laundering (Prohibition and Prevention) Acts of 2011 (as amended) and 2022.
