Manchester United have dismissed Ruben Amorim as manager, 14 months after his appointment, the club confirmed on Monday.
In a statement, the club said the decision was made “reluctantly” but deemed necessary to give the team the “best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.” United thanked Amorim for his contributions and wished him well in the future.
Current Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher will take temporary charge for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Burnley. United sit sixth in the table following a 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday.
Amorim, 40, had publicly expressed frustration in the aftermath of that game, insisting he was the club’s manager—not merely a coach—and urging the scouting department and Director of Football Jason Wilcox “to do their job.” He also avoided clarifying the club’s recent transfer plans, hinting at tension behind the scenes.
“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach,” Amorim said at a press conference. “I know my name is not Tuchel, it’s not Conte, it’s not Mourinho, but I’m the manager of Manchester United. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me.”
Amorim joined United in November 2024 and guided the team to the Europa League final in Bilbao in May, where they lost to Tottenham Hotspur. The club, however, finished 15th in the Premier League last season.
His 14-month tenure is the shortest for a permanent Manchester United manager since David Moyes, who was dismissed eight months into his reign in 2014. United, 20-time English champions, have not won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in 2013.
