The Kano State Police Command has arrested three principal suspects in connection with the murder of a housewife and her six children at Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters in Kano.
The arrests were confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday, which said the operation followed intelligence-led investigations carried out on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. The exercise was coordinated under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the suspects were apprehended during an overnight sting operation based on credible intelligence.
“Acting on reliable information, a team of crack operatives successfully arrested three suspected masterminds behind the killing of a housewife and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters,” Kiyawa said.
The suspects were identified as Umar Auwalu, 23, of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters; Isyaku Yakubu, also known as Chebe, 40, of Sagagi Quarters; and Yakubu Abdulaziz, popularly called Wawo, 21, of Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters.
Police said Auwalu, who is alleged to be the leader of the group and a nephew of the deceased, confessed to planning the attack. He reportedly admitted during interrogation that the syndicate had been involved in other violent crimes in recent times, including the killing of two housewives at Tudun Yola Quarters.
Items recovered from the suspects include blood-stained clothing, two mobile phones belonging to the deceased, a cutlass, a club locally known as gora, and an undisclosed sum of money believed to have been taken from the scene.
The command commended the officers involved in the operation and thanked members of the public for their cooperation, assuring residents that efforts to bring all perpetrators of crime to justice would be sustained.
The incident, which has shocked residents of Dorayi Chiranchi and beyond, has continued to attract widespread condemnation and renewed calls for increased community vigilance across Kano State.
