President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to use the 2026 Lenten and Ramadan seasons to promote unity, peace and stability, while praying for the nation’s security and progress.
In a personally signed statement, the President noted that the simultaneous commencement of Lent and Ramadan this year is a rare occurrence and a reminder of the shared values among Nigerians of different faiths.
Tinubu described Lent, observed by Christians, as a period of fasting, abstinence and penitence in remembrance of Jesus Christ’s time in the wilderness before His crucifixion, which he said brought salvation to humanity.
He explained that Ramadan, observed by Muslims, represents total submission to God, emphasising sacrifice, devotion, service, communal love and giving. He added that beyond the obligatory fast, the holy month encourages deep spiritual reflection and obedience to Islamic teachings.
The President urged citizens to uphold the core principles of their faiths by fostering good neighbourliness and national cohesion.
“As a nation and as a people, I urge us, as we embark on these important observances, to ensure good neighbourliness, promote peace, unity and stability, and pray for the progress and security of our nation,” he said.
Tinubu also expressed hope that the lessons and blessings of the sacred seasons would endure among Nigerians.
