President Bola Tinubu has urged citizens to maintain peace and order during Saturday’s elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano State, and Rivers State. In a statement released Friday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President also called on security agencies to exercise restraint and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
“President Tinubu urged all eligible voters to come out and vote without fear, emphasising that the democratic process thrives best in an atmosphere of calm, tolerance, and mutual respect,” the statement read.
He appealed to voters, security personnel, and INEC officials to carry out their responsibilities professionally, while urging political parties, candidates, and their supporters to avoid violence, inflammatory rhetoric, or any actions that could undermine the credibility of the polls.
The President warned security agencies against high-handedness or intimidation, stressing their role is to safeguard lives and property while protecting the integrity of the ballot. He also called on INEC to ensure timely accreditation, smooth voting procedures, accurate collation, and prompt transmission of results in line with the Electoral Act 2026.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting free, fair, and credible elections, expressing confidence that the outcome would reflect the will of the people and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
INEC is set to conduct elections across the six FCT area councils, as well as bye-elections in Ahoada East II and Khana II constituencies in Rivers State, and Kano Municipal and Ungogo constituencies in Kano State.
On Thursday, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike announced a work-free day on Friday and a restriction of movement from 8 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday to facilitate the council elections. In a nationwide broadcast, Wike urged residents to participate actively and responsibly, stressing the importance of orderly conduct, respect for the rules, and respect for the outcome.
He thanked President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026, noting it demonstrates the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring transparent elections. Wike encouraged FCT residents to make their voices heard and vote for leaders who will contribute to development, peace, and prosperity in the territory.
