Cristiano Ronaldo has been included in Portugal’s squad for the start of the Nations League campaign as new head coach Jorge Jesus named his first team since taking charge.
The 41-year-old forward said last month that the 2026-27 season would “probably” be his final campaign, potentially ending a career in which he has scored more than 950 goals for club and country.
Jesus, 72, previously coached Ronaldo at Saudi club Al-Nassr before leaving the club in May after guiding them to the Saudi Pro League title. He replaced Roberto Martinez following Portugal’s last-16 exit at the World Cup.
Ronaldo is the leading scorer in men’s international football, with 146 goals in 233 appearances for Portugal.
He became the first player to score at six World Cups last summer, although his performances at the tournament attracted criticism, while Martinez faced scrutiny over his continued selection of the veteran captain.
Borussia Dortmund forward Fabio Silva has been recalled after making his only previous Portugal appearance in November 2024.
Benfica midfielder Joao Palhinha has also returned to the squad for the first time in nearly a year.
Portugal have won the Nations League twice and are the defending champions after beating Spain on penalties in the 2025 final.
Portugal will open their 2026-27 campaign against Wales in Lisbon on September 24, before travelling to face Norway in Oslo three days later.
They will then play Denmark away on October 1 and host Norway in Porto on October 4.
