Olorundare Moshood Jimoh, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, has defended the conduct of officers in a recent case involving a traffic offender, stating that there was no evidence of abuse or dehumanisation.
Speaking at a meeting at the police headquarters in Ikeja, CP Jimoh said the suspect, arrested for driving against traffic, was processed according to legal procedures. “The suspect was promptly taken before a mobile court, where the charges were read, and bail was granted,” he explained, adding that the individual was only remanded after failing to meet bail conditions, in full compliance with the law.
While backing the officers in this instance, the commissioner issued a firm warning that any unit found guilty of human rights violations would face strict action. “I will not hesitate to dissolve the task force and bring in a new set of personnel if there is clear evidence of human rights violations, as no officer is indispensable,” he said.
CP Jimoh also disclosed that retraining programmes have been initiated for task force personnel, focusing on professional conduct, respect for human rights, and proper enforcement of environmental and sanitation laws.
The statement aims to reassure the public that the command does not condone misconduct while supporting officers who carry out their duties within the law.
