BMW’s Chinese unit announced a recall of nearly 180,000 vehicles on Tuesday after authorities flagged a potential wiring fault in air conditioning systems that could pose a fire hazard.
According to the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the recall affects 133,849 locally manufactured 5 Series vehicles produced between December 5, 2023, and April 12, 2025. It also covers 45,678 imported 5 Series, 7 Series, and M5 models built from June 2022 to April 2025.
SAMR said the defect involves the front cabin air conditioning wiring harness, which may be damaged during after-sales air filter replacements. “In extreme cases, this could cause a short circuit, posing a fire risk,” the regulator warned.
BMW will inspect and secure the affected wiring harnesses at no cost to owners. The recall takes effect immediately.
