Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has called for unity among political actors in the state, cautioning against divisive politics and inflammatory rhetoric as political activities begin to intensify nationwide.
Speaking during a State Executive Council meeting, Diri urged stakeholders to prioritise shared values and communal harmony over partisan interests, noting that political affiliations are temporary, while cultural identity and social bonds remain enduring.
“Political parties will come and go, but we remain one people. We must be mindful of our words and actions, because beyond politics, we share the same communities and identity,” the governor said.
He warned against the growing use of abusive language and personal attacks in political discourse, stressing that such conduct could heighten tensions and destabilise communities. According to him, political engagement must be guided by responsibility and mutual respect.
Diri also criticised what he described as misplaced priorities in public debates, particularly the focus on pipeline surveillance contracts. He urged stakeholders to shift attention to broader issues such as resource ownership, economic development, and long-term benefits for the people of the Niger Delta.
“We are debating pipeline contracts while neglecting bigger questions about ownership of our natural resources. We must refocus on what truly benefits our people,” he said.
The governor called for a more issue-based and respectful political culture that reflects the aspirations of the people, as political activities gather momentum ahead of future electoral cycles.
