The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced an indefinite nationwide strike set to begin at 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
The action follows the Federal Government’s decision to halt the rollout of the revised Professional Allowance Table, a key element of agreements reached after NARD’s 2025 industrial action. The decision was taken at the end of NARD’s virtual Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting on Saturday.
In a statement, NARD National President Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim described the development as “unfortunate,” blaming the government for pushing doctors toward renewed industrial action.
Dr. Ibrahim said the dispute centers on the implementation of the revised allowance table, which includes improved remuneration for call duty, shift allowances, rural posting incentives, and non-clinical duties. Although the rollout was initially scheduled for January 2026 and later delayed to February, NARD alleged the government now plans to halt the process by April—a move the association says breaches prior agreements and undermines trust.
The union is calling for an immediate reversal of the decision and the payment of all outstanding entitlements to prevent further disruption to healthcare services nationwide.
