Chelsea have agreed a deal to sell Spanish defender Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid in a transfer worth an initial £47.5 million, with performance-related add-ons potentially taking the total value to £51.8 million.
The 27-year-old is currently with the Spain national team in the United States for the FIFA World Cup and is expected to complete the move once the tournament concludes.
Cucurella attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Manchester City. However, the former Barcelona academy graduate is understood to have prioritised a move to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Chelsea signed Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 for £63 million, and he went on to establish himself as a key member of the squad. His departure marks another significant change at Stamford Bridge ahead of the new season.
The transfer adds to an active recruitment drive by incoming Real Madrid manager José Mourinho, who is set to officially take charge next month. The Spanish giants have already secured the signings of Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Bernardo Silva during the summer transfer window.
Cucurella’s exit follows a season in which he publicly questioned Chelsea’s transfer strategy and criticised the club’s decision to part ways with former manager Enzo Maresca earlier in the year. He was reportedly not among the club’s group of “untouchable” players, which includes Cole Palmer and captain Reece James.
Chelsea are expected to assess their options at left-back following Cucurella’s departure. Dutch defender Jorrel Hato, who joined from Ajax last summer for £37 million, is currently considered a leading candidate to assume the role, although the club could still seek reinforcements in the position.
The move is understood to be unrelated to ongoing speculation linking Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández with a switch to Real Madrid. Fernández previously stated in an interview that he would be open to living in Madrid, but Chelsea are not expected to entertain offers below £120 million for the Argentina international.
Fernández joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 for a reported fee of £106.8 million and remains a key part of the club’s long-term plans despite continued transfer speculation.
