Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has been appointed head coach of the German national team, with the German Football Association (DFB) tasking him with rebuilding the country’s struggling football programme.
The DFB announced the appointment on Friday, confirming that Klopp has signed a contract running until the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Klopp succeeds Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned earlier this month following Germany’s disappointing Round of 32 exit to Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The defeat marked Germany’s third consecutive early World Cup elimination since winning the tournament in 2014.
Speaking at his unveiling in Frankfurt, Klopp described the appointment as the greatest honour of his professional career.
“It’s a great honour for me to be sitting here today. This is ideally the high point of my career, of my professional life. I will give it everything I have,” he said.
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf said Klopp’s contract will officially begin on August 15 and run through the summer of 2030.
Klopp joins the national team after serving as Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull since 2025, overseeing the company’s football operations, including RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg and the New York Red Bulls.
Neuendorf thanked Red Bull for releasing Klopp from his contract early, adding that the DFB would make a €1 million donation to the company’s Wings for Life charity instead of paying a release fee.
Klopp returns to management after previously stating he had stepped away from coaching following his departure from Liverpool in 2024.
During his successful spell at Anfield, he guided Liverpool to the Premier League title, ending the club’s 30-year league title drought, while also winning the UEFA Champions League and several domestic and international trophies.
The 59-year-old had also enjoyed successful managerial stints with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund before moving to Liverpool.
Klopp will work alongside Germany’s sporting director, Rudi Völler, as he begins preparations for the UEFA Nations League.
His first squad is expected to be announced in mid-September ahead of four Nations League fixtures, beginning with a match against the Netherlands on September 24.
The new Germany coach is expected to build the team around emerging stars Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala as the four-time world champions seek to return to the top of international football.
