Ezri Konsa has completed his £51 million move from Aston Villa to Arsenal, with the England defender describing the transfer as a proud moment in his career.
The 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Premier League champions, with Arsenal holding an option to extend the deal by another year. The agreement could earn Villa a further £4 million in add-ons.
“It’s a proud moment for me and my family to play for one of the best teams in the world,” Konsa said after completing the move.
Arsenal had been in negotiations with Villa for several weeks after the clubs initially disagreed over the defender’s valuation. Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jarrell Quansah was also considered by the Gunners before they settled on Konsa.
Konsa made 286 appearances for Villa after joining from Brentford in July 2019. He helped the club win the Europa League in May, their first major trophy since 1982.
The defender made 48 appearances last season, scoring twice and providing one assist as Villa finished fourth in the Premier League to secure Champions League qualification.
Konsa also featured in every game for England at this summer’s World Cup as Thomas Tuchel’s side reached the semi-finals, where they were beaten by Argentina. England later secured the bronze medal by defeating France.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta praised Konsa’s quality, athleticism and versatility, highlighting his ability to operate at both centre-back and right-back.
The transfer takes Arsenal’s spending beyond £100 million this summer, following the arrivals of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for £75 million and Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34 million.
Konsa’s arrival also strengthens an Arsenal defence dealing with injuries. William Saliba is facing an extended absence with a back problem, while first-choice right-back Jurrien Timber is sidelined with a groin injury.
That leaves Ben White as Arsenal’s only fit senior right-back, with 21-year-old Cristhian Mosquera providing another option at right-sided centre-back alongside Gabriel Magalhaes.
Konsa’s departure is another major change to Villa’s squad this summer as the club continues to manage financial restrictions under UEFA’s squad cost ratio rules.
Villa have already received two UEFA sanctions for breaches, including a £9.5 million fine last year and a £19.4 million penalty in June, although £12.9 million of the latest sanction was suspended following a settlement.
The club have also seen several key players leave. Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers departed last month, with Rogers joining Chelsea for a reported £117 million British-record fee. Left-back Lucas Digne has also moved to Paris Saint-Germain.
Villa must still resolve Emi Martinez’s future after his proposed transfer to Juventus collapsed, while Al-Hilal could make another attempt to sign striker Ollie Watkins before the 1 September transfer deadline.
Konsa’s move leaves Matty Cash, Pau Torres, Victor Lindelof, John McGinn and Emi Buendia as the remaining players from the Villa side that won the Europa League in Istanbul.
Arsenal could potentially manage without signing another defender, but manager Mikel Arteta’s preference for balance in central defence means Konsa’s versatility could prove particularly valuable during the season.
