Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged Nigerians, particularly residents of Lagos, to uphold patriotism, resilience and unity as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Sanwo-Olu, who is Chairman of the South-West Governors’ Forum, said Nigeria’s progress depended on the collective efforts and responsible citizenship of its people.
The governor made the call in an Independence Day message issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile.
He said the anniversary was not only an opportunity to commemorate Nigeria’s independence on October 1, 1960, but also a reminder of the responsibility to contribute to the country’s development.
Sanwo-Olu commended the country’s founding fathers, patriots and past and present public officials for their contributions to maintaining Nigeria’s unity despite its religious, ethnic and cultural diversity.
He urged citizens to demonstrate patriotism through everyday actions that promote social cohesion, respect the rights of others and support national development.
“As citizens, we must believe in our country and in our collective capacity to build the nation we all desire,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He urged Nigerians not to abandon the vision of the country’s founding fathers and called on citizens to work with leaders towards building a better nation.
“Our diversity should be a source of strength and not division,” he said.
The governor also urged Nigerians to approach the country’s challenges with renewed faith, responsible citizenship and collective action.
“As we celebrate the 66th Independence anniversary, let us recommit ourselves to doing what is right, work with our leaders for a better country and walk in unity as one family,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu said Nigeria’s ability to overcome past challenges remained a reason for optimism about its future.
