A passenger train travelling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed on Tuesday morning, sparking panic among passengers and relatives.
The incident occurred at about 11:09 a.m. at kilometre 49, between Kubwa and Asham stations, shortly after the train departed Abuja, according to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with passengers scrambling to safety in fear and confusion. The cause of the derailment has yet to be determined, and there were no immediate reports of casualties.
Security sources confirmed that military personnel were deployed to the site to support evacuation efforts.
In a statement, NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa said emergency rescue teams and medical personnel had been mobilised, with nearby hospitals placed on alert.
“A full complement of security is already on ground as efforts are ongoing to move all passengers back to Abuja safely,” Opeifa said.
The Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor, one of the busiest in the country, has previously witnessed security and operational challenges, heightening concerns whenever incidents occur along the route.
