Amazon is in discussions to acquire U.S. satellite telecommunications firm Globalstar, in a move aimed at strengthening its position against SpaceX’s Starlink network, according to a report by the Financial Times.
Sources familiar with the negotiations said both companies are working through complex aspects of the potential deal, which has yet to be finalised and could still collapse.
The talks come as SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, prepares for a possible initial public offering that could value the company at up to $75 billion. Its Starlink service currently operates a constellation of more than 10,000 satellites providing global internet connectivity.
Amazon, founded by Jeff Bezos, is developing a rival satellite network, known as Project Kuiper, with over 200 satellites already in orbit.
Globalstar, valued at approximately $9 billion, operates a smaller low Earth orbit satellite network. However, the potential acquisition is complicated by a 20 percent stake held by Apple, requiring parallel negotiations between Amazon and Apple.
While Globalstar declined to comment on the reported talks, Amazon has also not issued an official response. Reports indicate the company has seen its share price surge significantly over the past year amid growing interest in satellite communications.
