ARISE News Channel has confirmed the death of anchor Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday.
The 29-year-old journalist, affectionately known as “Sommie,” succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack, which is currently under investigation by the Nigeria Police.
Maduagwu was a prominent figure at ARISE News, serving as a News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer. The network described her as a “cherished member” of the team, noting her charisma, professionalism, and ability to connect with viewers nationwide.
“Sommie was not only a vibrant voice on air but also a lawyer, a supportive colleague, and a friend to many,” the station said in a statement.
Her death has sent shockwaves across the Nigerian media industry, with colleagues and friends paying tribute on social media, remembering her passion, brilliance, and warmth.
ARISE management called for a “speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits” and extended condolences to her family, adding: “Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory.”
