Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, have congratulated Ademola Adeleke on his re-election as governor of Osun State.
The opposition leaders shared separate messages on X on Sunday, shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke the winner of the August 15 governorship election.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, described the outcome as a victory for democracy and commended Osun voters for defending their mandate.
He said Adeleke secured a renewed mandate through his commitment to the people, compassion for their needs and record of achievements in office.
Obi said the election showed that democracy is strengthened when citizens remain vigilant, understand their civic responsibilities and insist that their votes count.
He urged Nigerians to remain actively involved in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections, while calling on political actors to prioritise citizens’ interests and promote peace, unity and the rule of law.
Atiku also congratulated Adeleke, saying his victory reflected the choice of Osun voters at the ballot box.
“I congratulate Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election as Governor of Osun State,” Atiku said.
He commended the people of Osun for their participation in the election and wished Adeleke success in his second term.
INEC declared Adeleke, who contested under the Accord Party, the winner after he polled 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who secured 444,815 votes.
The victory gives Adeleke another four-year term after he was first elected governor in 2022 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Meanwhile, Afrobeat singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, celebrated his uncle’s victory shortly after the official declaration.
Davido had been following Channels Television’s live coverage of the results while awaiting the announcement.
When Returning Officer Joshua Ogunwole declared Adeleke the winner, the singer celebrated by jumping, kneeling and eventually lying on the floor in excitement. Members of his team joined him in celebrating the result.
Davido served as chairman of the Imole Youth Mobilisation Campaign Council and participated in rallies and grassroots mobilisation activities during the campaign.
Jubilation was also reported in several parts of Osun State, particularly Osogbo, the state capital, and Ede, Adeleke’s hometown.
