Atlético Madrid face increasing competition in their pursuit of Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, with Aston Villa also interested in the Senegal international.
Jackson remains one of Atlético’s preferred options to strengthen Diego Simeone’s attack after Alexander Sørloth suffered an injury, leaving the Spanish side short of alternatives at the start of the season.
Atlético are not seeking a direct replacement for Julián Álvarez, whose potential departure has been ruled out, but want to add another forward who can play alongside him and provide Simeone with greater attacking options.
According to MARCA, Atlético director of men’s professional football Mateu Alemany travelled to London on Thursday, with transfer business reportedly high on his agenda.
However, reaching an agreement with Chelsea could prove difficult. Atlético have already made significant investments this summer, including the signing of Cristian Romero, meaning another major transfer could place further pressure on their finances.
A loan deal has therefore emerged as a potential solution, although Jackson’s wages would also need to be addressed as part of any negotiations with Chelsea.
Alemany recently acknowledged the difficulties of operating in the current transfer market, saying: “Everything is complicated. The market, if you look at it from the outside, has become tough, and every year it gets more complicated because there is a lot of money in the system.”
Aston Villa’s interest could further complicate Atlético’s plans, particularly if the Premier League club decides to make a formal approach for Jackson.
A return to England would offer Jackson the advantage of remaining in a league he already knows well, avoiding the need for another adaptation period.
The 24-year-old previously played for Villarreal, making 48 appearances and scoring 13 goals with six assists before earning a move to Chelsea. He has also gained experience at Bayern Munich during a loan spell.
Jackson’s pace, movement and ability to attack space make him an attractive option for Atlético. He can operate as a central striker but is also capable of drifting into wider areas and creating opportunities.
His arrival could provide Simeone with additional attacking combinations involving Álvarez and Sørloth once the latter returns from injury.
Atlético are already assessing the conditions of a potential deal, but Aston Villa’s interest has added another obstacle to their pursuit.
The Spanish club could nevertheless appeal to Jackson by offering him a return to LaLiga and an important role in Simeone’s plans.
