Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati says she is ready to give her all in Friday’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 quarter-final against hosts Switzerland after recovering from a bout of viral meningitis that briefly cast doubt over her tournament.
The reigning Ballon d’Or Féminin winner, who missed the opening two group games against Portugal and Belgium, returned to the starting lineup in Spain’s 3-1 victory over Italy last week, helping secure top spot in Group B with a perfect nine points.
“It happened all of a sudden—I felt great, and then, boom, something unexpected and frustrating,” Bonmati told reporters on Thursday. “I’ve had a tough few weeks. I’m not used to this kind of situation, so now I want to enjoy myself. I hope to give my best.”
Spain, reigning world champions, are seeking their first-ever European title and enter the match in Bern as strong favourites, having scored 14 goals in the group stage.
Switzerland, however, are hoping that passionate home support at the Wankdorf Stadium will push them to a historic semi-final berth. Defender Noelle Maritz, who plays for Aston Villa, said the atmosphere during their dramatic qualification against Finland was unforgettable.
“Playing in a packed stadium with so much energy from the fans—it was indescribable,” Maritz said. “It gave us a huge lift. I think it’ll be a big help again tomorrow.”
The winner of Friday’s clash will face either France or Germany in the semi-finals on Wednesday in Zurich.
