Brazil Beat Japan 2-1 to Reach Last 16

Substitute Gabriel Martinelli scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Brazil defeated Japan 2-1 on Monday to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

The Arsenal winger struck in the fifth minute of added time in Houston, breaking Japanese hearts and sealing Brazil’s place in the next round after a hard-fought knockout encounter.

The five-time world champions will face either Ivory Coast or Norway in New Jersey on Sunday.

Japan stunned Brazil in the 29th minute when midfielder Kaishu Sano capitalised on a defensive error to score a superb solo goal. After intercepting a misplaced pass, the Mainz midfielder surged forward before calmly finishing past goalkeeper Alisson for his first international goal.

Despite dominating possession in the opening stages, Brazil struggled to convert their chances and went into the break trailing.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti introduced teenage striker Endrick at half-time after Lucas Paquetá limped off injured, and Brazil emerged with renewed intensity.

The equaliser arrived 11 minutes into the second half when veteran midfielder Casemiro headed home from Gabriel’s cross after sustained Brazilian pressure.

Brazil continued to push for a winner, with Vinícius Júnior becoming increasingly influential. The Real Madrid forward came close to scoring, forcing goalkeeper Zion Suzuki into a fine save before striking the post from a tight angle.

Japan defended resolutely, with Takehiro Tomiyasu producing two crucial goal-line clearances to keep the scores level for much of the second half.

However, Brazil finally found the breakthrough in the 95th minute when Martinelli latched onto the decisive opportunity and fired home to send the Brazilian supporters into celebration.

The victory extends Brazil’s quest for a sixth World Cup title, while Japan’s campaign ended in the knockout stage despite another impressive tournament performance.
