As Christians across Nigeria join the global community in celebrating Christmas, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on churches to observe the season with wisdom, vigilance, and a strong sense of responsibility.
The call was made by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, in a statement released on Christmas Eve, in which he also extended festive greetings to Christians nationwide and to all people of goodwill.
Describing Christmas as a sacred season that reflects God’s love, hope, and the triumph of light over darkness, Archbishop Okoh said the message of the holiday calls on humanity to live by the values of Christ—love, peace, patience, sacrifice, and compassion. He noted that despite economic challenges and security concerns in the country, the birth of Christ offers reassurance that hope endures.
“As churches gather to worship and rejoice during this festive season, I urge Christian leaders and congregations to do so with wisdom, vigilance, and a deep sense of responsibility. The protection of human life is sacred and must remain paramount,” he said.
Archbishop Okoh encouraged churches, particularly those in high-risk areas, to implement practical measures to safeguard worshippers. Where security presence is limited, he advised leaders to consider safer locations for services or to hold smaller gatherings that allow for better protection.
He also appealed to security agencies to strengthen their presence around places of worship during the festive season and encouraged churches to collaborate closely with law enforcement to ensure safe celebrations.
The CAN President further urged Nigerians to remember those affected by violence, displacement, or hardship, and to embrace peace, justice, and unity.
“United by our shared humanity and common destiny, we must renew our commitment to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and national cohesion. May the joy, peace, and hope of Christmas fill our homes, churches, and our land. I pray that the New Year will usher in renewed faith, healing, and lasting peace for Nigeria,” Archbishop Okoh added.
