Canada secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa on Sunday to book a place in the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in the country’s history, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Stephen Eustaquio.
With both teams making their maiden appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds, the contest looked destined for extra time until Eustaquio struck from outside the penalty area in the closing moments to seal a historic victory for the co-hosts.
Canada, who were forced to play the knockout fixture in Los Angeles after finishing outside the top spot in their group, will face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16 in Houston on July 4. South Africa, meanwhile, bowed out after an impressive tournament campaign.
Ahead of the match, Canada coach Jesse Marsch had highlighted the potential impact of star defender Alphonso Davies, who returned to the squad after recovering from a hamstring injury. However, the Bayern Munich full-back was left on the bench at kick-off.
Canada dominated possession and created the better chances in the opening half. In the 22nd minute, Eustaquio delivered a precise free-kick to Derek Cornelius, but the defender mistimed his header from close range.
South Africa threatened on the counterattack but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities. Canada came close again just before the interval when Moise Bombito’s header was cleared off the line before goalkeeper Ronwen Williams denied Tajon Buchanan from the rebound.
The Canadians continued to press after the break against a disciplined South African defence. Substitute Niko Sigur set up Tani Oluwaseyi, whose effort was brilliantly saved by Williams, while defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi produced a crucial clearance to deny Jonathan David from the rebound.
Davies was introduced in the 75th minute to a loud ovation and immediately added urgency to Canada’s attack. He created two promising opportunities, first setting up Promise David, who shot wide, before providing Jonathan David with another chance that was saved by Williams.
With extra time looming, Canada finally found the breakthrough in the second minute of stoppage time. Jacob Shaffelburg surged down the right flank and delivered a cross that was only partially cleared into the path of Eustaquio.
The Porto midfielder controlled the ball with his chest before firing a first-time strike into the bottom-left corner, sparking wild celebrations among the Canadian players and supporters.
The dramatic victory sends Canada into the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time, while South Africa exit the tournament after a spirited campaign.
