Chelsea are reportedly pursuing a move for Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck as the Premier League club continues its busy summer transfer activity ahead of the new season.
The Blues have already made headlines in the transfer market after signing Morgan Rogers in a £117 million deal, making him the most expensive British footballer in history. Chelsea have also strengthened their squad with the arrivals of full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta and winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP.
However, reports indicate that Chelsea are not finished with their recruitment drive. According to Mail Sport, the West London club is working on a deal to sign experienced striker Welbeck from Brighton.
Chelsea are said to view the 36-year-old as an ideal addition to provide experience and depth to manager Xabi Alonso’s attacking options ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Welbeck, who previously played for Manchester United and Arsenal, has scored 90 goals in 400 Premier League appearances during his career. He enjoyed an impressive season with Brighton last term, scoring 13 league goals to help the Seagulls secure European qualification.
The report adds that Chelsea have already made enquiries about the former England international, whose current contract with Brighton is due to expire at the end of the upcoming season.
If the move materialises, Chelsea’s attacking department would become even more crowded. Alonso currently has Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu, João Pedro, Liam Delap and Emmanuel Emegha among his striking options, with reports suggesting that at least two forwards could leave Stamford Bridge should Welbeck complete the switch.
