Chelsea Football Club reported a Premier League record pre-tax loss of £262.4 million ($349.3 million) for the 2024/25 financial year, the club announced on Wednesday.
The figure surpasses the previous league record of £197.5 million, set by Manchester City in the 2010/11 season. Chelsea had posted a £128.4 million profit in the prior year, boosted by the sale of the women’s team to Blueco Midco for nearly £200 million.
The club attributed the losses to higher operating costs in 2024/25. Revenue rose to £490.9 million, the second-highest in Chelsea’s history, reflecting earnings including their victory in last year’s Club World Cup.
In March, Chelsea admitted breaching Premier League rules over £47.5 million in undisclosed payments under former owner Roman Abramovich. The club was fined £10.75 million and received a suspended one-year transfer ban. Unlike other clubs in similar situations, Chelsea avoided a points deduction due to self-reporting and “exceptional co-operation” under new ownership led by U.S. businessman Todd Boehly.
Chelsea remained compliant with the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) for the three-year period ending 2024/25. The regulations allow maximum losses of £105 million over three years, though certain expenditures, such as investment in women’s football and youth development, may be excluded.
The club also reported that its women’s team, champions of the Women’s Super League for the past three seasons, posted a £17.1 million loss despite generating £21.3 million in revenue.
