The Dangote Group has been hailed for its commitment to environmental sustainability after donating 10,000 mangroves to the E1GP Lagos Mangrove Restoration Programme at the Eko Park Mangrove Sanctuary, Lagos.
The programme, which brought together government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, corporate sponsors, and international partners, focused on restoring Lagos’ fast-depleting mangrove ecosystem and tackling climate change.
Representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Mr. Sam Egube, stressed that coastal restoration is a shared duty. “Mangroves represent a natural fightback, a nature-based solution to climate change. Together, we can create a Lagos that is greener, stronger, and more resilient,” he said.
Experts described mangroves as vital natural carbon sinks, shoreline protectors, and biodiversity habitats, lamenting their depletion across Nigeria. The Eko Park Mangrove Sanctuary, covering four acres, will serve as a hub for conservation, research, and ecological restoration.
Speaking on behalf of the Dangote Group, Dr. James Adenuga said the initiative was symbolic and community-driven. “We are glad to be part of this effort, happening just a stone’s throw from our refinery and fertilizer plant. We hope other organizations will follow suit,” he noted.
Traditional leaders praised the initiative, while guests toured the sanctuary’s facilities, including the African Mangrove Museum and the Plank Walkway. The site is set to officially open in December 2025.
The event also featured the unveiling of the world’s first Electric Boat Race and the upcoming Africa Blue Economy Summit, positioning Lagos as a hub for marine innovation and sustainable development.
Stakeholders agreed that Dangote’s leadership in mangrove restoration sets a benchmark for corporate responsibility, reinforcing that environmental protection is a collective obligation for the future of Lagos and Africa.
