Dortmund Signs Chukwuemeka from Chelsea

Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea on a contract running until 2030, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old England under-21 international joins for a reported fee of €25 million ($29 million) after spending the second half of last season on loan at Dortmund, where he featured 17 times in all competitions, scoring once. Despite injury setbacks, Chukwuemeka impressed as the club reached the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup.

“I’m happy Borussia Dortmund is now my footballing home. I will give everything to make sure we achieve our goals as a team,” Chukwuemeka said in a statement.

Born in Austria, Chukwuemeka grew up in England and came through Aston Villa’s academy before moving to Chelsea in 2022.

Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken welcomed the transfer, describing the midfielder as a player who “further increases the quality and creativity of our attacking midfield.”

Chukwuemeka becomes Dortmund’s third summer signing from England, following Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland and Yan Couto from Manchester City. Jobe’s elder brother Jude joined Dortmund from Birmingham City in 2020 before making a high-profile move to Real Madrid three years later for a fee reported at €100 million.

According to German outlet Bild, Dortmund could add further Premier League talent before Monday’s transfer deadline, with Chelsea defender Aaron Anselmino and Wolves striker Fabio Silva reportedly on their radar. Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho—who has had two previous spells at the Westfalenstadion and recently ended a loan at Chelsea—has also been linked with a possible return.
