Following the conclusion of the 2024 Edo State governorship election, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Asue Ighodalo expressed heartfelt gratitude to his supporters, pledging that their sacrifices will not be forgotten. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ighodalo received 247,274 votes, finishing behind All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Monday Okpebholo, who garnered 291,667 votes.
In a speech delivered to his supporters, Ighodalo hailed them as “the true heroes of our democracy,” emphasizing the significance of their efforts for a better Edo State. He lamented that their progress was “unjustly halted” on September 21, 2024, by individuals not aligned with the state’s best interests.
Ighodalo highlighted his sincere commitment to serving the people and creating a “Pathway to Prosperity for All.” He commended the citizens of Edo State who faced intimidation and threats to exercise their right to vote, stating, “That day will forever be etched in our history as one of our darkest moments, marked by the brazen theft of our mandate.”
Despite the election setback, Ighodalo urged his supporters to remain steadfast and united in their vision for a prosperous Edo State, declaring, “Our journey does not end here; it is just beginning.”
