Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane has confirmed that Brazilian winger Estevão will miss the remainder of the English season due to injury, casting doubt on his participation in the upcoming World Cup.
The 19-year-old sustained a hamstring injury during Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United last week and has since been ruled out for the rest of the campaign.
McFarlane, who has returned to interim duties at Stamford Bridge following the departure of Liam Rosenior, disclosed the update ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Leeds on Sunday.
“Estevão, unfortunately, won’t play for us again this season. He’s going to be out for a little bit of time,” McFarlane said. “It’s really unfortunate, especially for someone so young and talented, but we’re here to support him.”
Asked about the winger’s chances of recovering in time for the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States, McFarlane added that he was uncertain.
“I’m not sure on that, if I’m honest,” he said. “I just know he won’t be available for us, so he’s hopeful he can make the World Cup, but I don’t know.”
