First City Monument Bank (FCMB) has partnered with EStars to bring esports education to Nigerian primary and secondary schools, aiming to equip students aged 7 to 14 with vital skills for the digital age.
In a statement, FCMB announced that the initiative seeks to introduce young Nigerians to essential 21st-century skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, using gaming as an educational tool. The program aligns with the bank’s commitment to fostering education and youth development.
Esports as an Educational Tool
EStars launched its esports education platform in Nigeria on July 16, offering a structured and enjoyable way for students to build skills that are crucial for success in an increasingly digital world but are often overlooked in traditional classrooms.
Managing Director of FCMB, Mrs. Yemisi Edun, highlighted the innovative nature of the program.
“EStars has brought a fun and innovative way to advance students’ knowledge and life skills. This platform allows schools to harness the power of play to cultivate a love for learning,” she said.
She emphasized the bank’s dedication to preparing young Nigerians for the challenges of the future.
“At FCMB, we believe in equipping the next generation with the skills they need to thrive in the age of AI and automation. We are not just preparing them for the future but empowering them to shape it,” Edun added.
Empowering Youth for the Digital Economy
EStars founder Mags Byrne underscored the platform’s potential to transform education.
“Our mission is to empower young minds with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in the esports industry and beyond,” she stated.
The initiative also received international support. Speaking at the July launch, British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter noted the economic potential of esports.
“Esports is now fully professional and is expected to contribute significantly to the UK economy. We are happy to support EStars in partnering with Nigerian schools,” Baxter said.
