FG Confirms New Tax Laws Take Effect January 1, 2026

By Ayomide Otitoju

The Federal Government has reaffirmed that the newly enacted tax laws will take full effect on January 1, 2026, dismissing speculations about possible delays or policy reversals.

In a statement issued from the State House on December 30, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the reforms form part of a broader effort to rebuild Nigeria’s fiscal framework and place the economy on a more sustainable path. He noted that some of the reforms had already taken effect on June 26, 2025.

According to the President, the tax reforms are not intended to increase the burden on citizens but to create a fairer, more efficient and harmonised tax system that supports economic growth and strengthens the social contract between the government and the people.

Tinubu acknowledged ongoing public discussions around certain provisions of the new laws but stressed that no substantive issues have been identified to warrant halting or reversing the reforms. He said the government has now shifted its focus fully to implementation.

The President emphasised that trust in governance is built through consistency and sound decision-making, rather than sudden policy reversals driven by pressure or misinformation. He assured Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to due process and the integrity of all enacted laws.

He also pledged continued engagement with the National Assembly to address any genuine concerns that may arise during implementation, adding that such issues would be handled strictly within the framework of the law.

Reiterating his administration’s commitment to national development, President Tinubu said the tax reforms are designed to promote fairness, shared responsibility and long-term prosperity for Nigeria.
