The Lagos Lagoon came alive in a dazzling display of innovation and excitement as FirstBank of Nigeria powered the continent’s first-ever E1 Lagos Grand Prix, transforming the city into Africa’s capital of clean energy and modern entertainment from October 3 to 5.

For two thrilling days, sleek electric powerboats sliced through the Lagoon amid cheers from thousands of spectators along Victoria Island’s waterfront, as Afrobeats rhythms echoed across the Marina. The event marked a milestone in Africa’s embrace of sustainable technology, blending sports, culture, and innovation in spectacular fashion.

In a goodwill message, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu praised the initiative as a bold declaration of Nigeria’s commitment to sustainability, lauding Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, FirstBank, and partners for delivering a world-class event.

“The E1 Powerboat Series combines world-class entertainment with clean energy innovation,” the president said. “This championship is not just a thrilling spectacle on water but a commitment to a greener and more sustainable future.”

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who led the ceremonial regatta to open the event, described the championship as a defining moment for Lagos.

“E1 Lagos GP is more than a race—it is a celebration of Lagos’ dynamism and our capacity to host world-class events,” he said. “It underscores our commitment to sustainability and our global potential.”

The event drew international athletes, investors, and celebrities, including Didier Drogba, co-owner of Team Drogba Global Africa, who brought star power to the waterfront festivities. Fans flocked to fan zones to enjoy music, selfies, and family fun in an atmosphere that blended culture, technology, and community.

For FirstBank, the E1 Lagos Grand Prix represented more than sponsorship—it was a statement of heritage and innovation. Acting Group Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Olayinka Ijabiyi, said the partnership reflected the bank’s 131-year tradition of reinvention and leadership.

“Innovation, sustainability, excitement—these are values that define us,” Ijabiyi said. “Who else but FirstBank could bring the first E1 GP to Nigeria? We are proud to have presented Lagos and Nigeria to the world.”

At the FirstBank Pavilion, guests experienced immersive tech showcases, lifestyle exhibitions, and brand activations that highlighted the bank’s identity as a lifestyle leader as much as a financial institution.

“This race is a net-zero emitter,” Ijabiyi added. “We’re committed to supporting a cleaner, greener future. It’s innovation meeting responsibility.”

The event also ties into FirstBank’s annual #FirstBankDecemberIssaVybe series, which celebrates Nigeria’s entertainment, food, and fashion culture during the festive season.

The grand finale on Sunday saw Team Brazil clinch victory, with pilots Timmy Hansen and Leva Millere-Hagin leading their electric boat to triumph ahead of Team Blue Rising and Team Drogba.

As the sun set over the Lagoon, Lagos glowed in celebration—a city redefined by innovation, ambition, and energy.

For many, the event symbolized the fusion of progress and tradition that defines modern Nigeria.

“I grew up knowing FirstBank as the reliable one,” said Latoya Johnson, a Lagos resident. “Seeing them behind something this big makes me proud. They’re not just banking our money—they’re banking our future.”

With its successful sponsorship of the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, FirstBank once again proved it is more than a bank—it is a driving force for innovation, sustainability, and national pride.
