Google on Tuesday unveiled its latest Pixel 9 smartphones, featuring advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities designed to compete directly with Apple’s iPhone. The new Pixel devices aim to further integrate users into Google’s ecosystem, mirroring Apple’s strategy of tightly linking the iPhone with its App Store and services.
The Pixel 9 models are equipped with Google’s Gemini AI, which enhances daily tasks such as booking appointments and managing vast amounts of saved data. According to Shenaz Zack, Senior Director of Product Management at Google, the AI can access and organize information across Gmail, calendars, and other Google services with user permission, offering personalized assistance.
One standout feature of the Pixel 9 is its ability to take a photo of a concert poster, check the user’s calendar for availability, and draft an invitation to friends—all with minimal input. The AI is also designed to handle more dynamic conversations, allowing for interruptions and sudden topic shifts. Additionally, the Pixel 9 can take notes during phone calls, notifying the other party before doing so.
Privacy remains a key focus, with Google emphasizing data protection and offering users the ability to create password-protected private spaces for apps and content.
The Pixel 9, starting at $899, and a new foldable model priced at $1,899, are positioned to showcase the capabilities of the Android operating system, which powers the majority of the world’s smartphones. Despite Google’s ambitious AI integration, Pixel phones represent only a small fraction of the global smartphone market, dominated by Samsung and Apple.
The release of the Pixel 9 comes amid heightened scrutiny of Google’s business practices. Last week, a U.S. judge ruled in a landmark antitrust case that Google had maintained a monopoly through its dominant search engine and exclusive distribution agreements. The ruling, delivered by District Court Judge Amit Mehta, could significantly impact how the tech industry operates in the future.
In addition to the Pixel 9, Google introduced new AI-powered Pixel earbuds and smartwatches designed to work seamlessly together. The Pixel watch, for example, can access live feeds from Nest camera-equipped doorbells, allowing users to see and speak with visitors remotely.
Google also recently launched an AI-enhanced television streaming device, the Google TV Streamer, which will serve as the centerpiece of a smart home ecosystem. Set for release on September 24, the device marks the end of the Chromecast line and signals Google’s ongoing commitment to integrating AI into everyday consumer technology.
As the race to lead in AI intensifies following the 2022 release of ChatGPT, Google is vying for dominance against rivals like Microsoft, OpenAI, and Meta, which has also infused its AI into consumer gadgets like smart glasses.
