A gunman opened fire at an Israeli military checkpoint in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, killing two soldiers before being shot dead by Israeli troops, the military said.
The attack occurred in the morning at a military post in Tayasir, in the northern West Bank. “A terrorist fired at the soldiers at a military post in Tayasir,” the military stated, confirming that the assailant was killed in the ensuing shootout.
Two other soldiers sustained severe injuries, while six others were slightly wounded in the attack.
The Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad praised the assault, describing it as a “heroic” operation and vowing that “the resistance will continue until the occupation is defeated.”
Ongoing Israeli Operations in Northern West Bank
Israeli forces have been conducting what they describe as a counterterrorism operation in and around Jenin, a known stronghold for militant activity.
Major General Avi Bluth, the Israeli commander responsible for the West Bank, said Tuesday’s attack underscored the “necessity” of continuing military operations in the region.
“This morning’s engagement with a despicable terrorist who emerged from the northern Samaria region demonstrates the necessity of the counterterrorism operation,” Bluth told reporters at the scene, pledging to “neutralize” militant threats.
Since launching the operation on January 21, the Israeli army has reported killing at least 50 militants. Meanwhile, the Palestinian health ministry reported on Monday that Israeli forces had killed 70 people in the West Bank since the beginning of the year.
The military campaign, which includes demolishing buildings in Jenin’s refugee camp, has drawn sharp condemnation from the Palestinian Authority, which accused Israel of “ethnic cleansing.”
Worsening Humanitarian Situation
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has raised concerns over the humanitarian impact of the ongoing military operations.
“Large parts of the camp were completely destroyed in a series of detonations by Israeli forces,” UNRWA spokeswoman Juliette Touma said, estimating that around 100 homes were either destroyed or severely damaged.
Violence has escalated across the West Bank since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack from Gaza triggered a full-scale war with Israel.
According to the Palestinian health ministry, at least 884 Palestinians, including many militants, have been killed in the West Bank since the conflict began.
