Gunmen who attacked a Christ Apostolic Church parish in Ekiti State have demanded a ransom of ₦1 billion for the release of worshippers abducted during the incident.
The attack occurred in Eda Oniyo, Ilejemeje Local Government Area, where armed men reportedly stormed a revival programme at about 7:15 p.m., firing for over 30 minutes before abducting 15 worshippers into a nearby forest. A visiting pastor was also killed during the assault.
Residents remain in shock, with families of the victims awaiting updates as security operations continue in the area.
Community leaders have called for stronger security presence and urged authorities to consider restricting evening religious gatherings as a temporary safety measure.
The Michael Falade visited the community and ordered the deployment of a joint security task force comprising police, military, and other operatives to intensify search and rescue efforts.
“We will do everything within our capacity to ensure those kidnapped are rescued alive and reunited with their families,” Falade said.
The traditional ruler of Eda Oniyo, Julius Oladipo Owodola, condemned the attack and called for urgent reinforcement of security architecture in the area, describing the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.
Security agencies say coordinated bush-combing operations are ongoing, while no official confirmation has been made on negotiations or possible release of the abducted victims.
