The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Abuja and District Society, on Saturday in Abuja, inaugurated its new executive committee with Alhaji Abdulrasheed Balogun emerging as its 11th Chairman.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 14-member committee is expected to lead the society from 2021 to 2022.
Speaking at his investiture, Balogun said that in his leadership, the district would ensure it encouraged young students to build a career in accountancy for the economic growth of the country.
“Another project that is dear to our district is the acquisition of bus for easy mobility of members, especially during the implementation of our much cherished catch them young programme designed for our younger generation, to encourage them to embrace accountancy as a career.
“This project is one of the great mandate of our great institute to strategically grow its membership through identifiable talents among the young students.
“This project however, requires constants visitation and collaboration with selected secondary schools and higher institutions of learning to sensitise and educate their students to the need to study accountancy and build a career there from,” he said.
According to him, the district intends to also introduce an accounting week to advance public-private partnership through educational programmes such as quiz and debate competitions.
He noted that employment generation, wealth creation, economic empowerment and poverty reduction, would remain a cardinal objective of the district.
Mrs Comfort Eyitayo, ICAN President, charged the new executive committee to contribute positively to the accounting profession in the country.
“The efforts of ICAN district societies in promoting accuracy and integrity would add up to positively impact the economy as a whole.
“The challenging situation currently facing the country affords leaders with clear vision the opportunity to display their innate abilities, surmount challenges and produce results.
“The coronavirus pandemic has impacted negatively on revenue generation potential and opportunities of most organisations whether in the public or private sector.
“As economies and businesses gradually recover from the pandemic, chartered accountants would play central role on the path to recovery and the building of more resilient economies,” she said.
Mrs Bosede Ikhanoba, immediate past chairman, ICAN Abuja and District Society, urged the new executive committee to lead the district with integrity and public trust.
NAN reports that the event which had both physical and virtual attendees, also featured the public presentation of a book entitled: “Microfinance Model for Entrepreneurial Development” authored by Alhaji Abdulrasheed Balogun.(NAN)
