The Kaduna State Government has lifted the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on Kaduna and Zaria metropolitan areas following the outbreak of violence during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests. The decision was made on Tuesday morning after the Kaduna State Security Council, led by Governor Uba Sani, conducted an extensive review of the security situation in the affected cities and their surroundings.
In an official statement, Samuel Aruwan, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, announced the complete removal of the 6 pm to 8 am curfew. According to the statement, law-abiding citizens in Kaduna and Zaria, as well as their environs, are now free to move and engage in legitimate activities without any restrictions.
The Security Council emphasized the importance of maintaining public order and urged that any processions or gatherings be verified with the appropriate authorities to prevent any potential breakdown of law and order.
“The removal of the curfew is effective immediately, starting today, Tuesday, 13th August 2024,” the statement read. “The Kaduna State Security Council, during an extensive assessment held last night, unanimously recommended the removal of the curfew and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the security and safety of the people of Kaduna State.”
The Council also disclosed that security forces would remain vigilant and continue monitoring for any threats to public peace, with strict measures to prosecute individuals or groups that pose such risks.
Governor Uba Sani, who presided over the Security Council briefing, praised the efforts of security agencies, religious and traditional leaders, and other critical stakeholders in containing the unrest that followed the protests in Kaduna and Zaria. He assured stakeholders of his commitment to an inclusive and participatory approach, vowing to continue engaging with them to maintain peace, unity, and the development of Kaduna State.
