The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has confirmed the death of a 300-level Mechanical Engineering student during a prohibited sign-out ceremony on Wednesday.

In a statement issued Thursday, Registrar Olayinka Balogun identified the victim as Babalola Marvelous Olanrewaju, who was shot during a gathering at the Ultramodern Wazo Market and later died from his injuries.

Balogun noted that sign-out activities have been banned since 2023, with hotels and event centers warned against hosting them. Preliminary investigations revealed the celebration was held on a football pitch within the market despite the ban.

Police were alerted by the acting dean of student affairs and deployed personnel from the monitoring unit and area command. The victim’s identity was confirmed through university records, and his body has been deposited at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital morgue.

The university said it is cooperating with police investigations and has informed the student’s parents. “The management extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased,” the statement read.
