As Lagos prepares for the 2025 Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has urged residents to embrace proper waste disposal practices to ensure a clean and healthy environment during and after the festive period.
In a statement released on Wednesday, LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, assured residents that the agency has made robust arrangements to manage the expected surge in waste generation across the city during the celebration.
“Eid-el-Kabir is a season of joy, gratitude, and communal harmony. While we celebrate with our families, it is essential that we fulfill our civic responsibility to protect the environment,” Gbadegesin said.
He emphasized the importance of proper handling and disposal of animal waste, food remnants, and packaging materials, warning that indiscriminate dumping would compromise public health and attract penalties.
LAWMA officials and enforcement teams, he noted, would be stationed across the city to monitor waste management operations and ensure compliance with sanitation standards throughout the period.
Gbadegesin appealed to residents to avoid dumping waste in road medians, drainages, and open spaces. He also urged butchers and livestock dealers to use designated slaughter facilities to uphold sanitary conditions in line with public health regulations.
He reiterated LAWMA’s commitment to maintaining environmental cleanliness beyond festive seasons and called on residents to support the agency by bagging and containerizing their waste for timely evacuation by PSP operators.
In a related development, LAWMA joined the global community in commemorating World Environment Day 2025, themed “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution.”
Gbadegesin said the theme aligns with LAWMA’s ongoing mission to combat plastic waste and restore the Lagos environment, stressing that environmental sustainability is a collective responsibility beginning with individual choices.
“We are collaborating with environmental stakeholders, schools, and community-based organisations to promote grassroots awareness and advocacy,” he said, calling on religious leaders, market associations, and community groups to educate their members on sustainable practices such as recycling, clearing blocked gutters, and discouraging street dumping.
He concluded by urging all Lagosians to reflect on the consequences of environmental neglect and to join hands with government agencies in building a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.
“World Environment Day is a reminder that every action counts. Together, we can protect the ecosystem that sustains our lives and livelihoods,” Gbadegesin stated.
