Liverpool have completed the signing of Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo on loan for the 2026–27 season, with an option to make the move permanent for £47 million ($63.5 million).
The 27-year-old Uruguay international has joined Liverpool ahead of the new Premier League season, giving manager Andoni Iraola another option in central defence.
Iraola had pushed for defensive reinforcements during the summer after Joe Gomez’s injury left Liverpool short of senior centre-backs during pre-season.
Araújo’s arrival provides Liverpool with additional defensive depth without committing immediately to another major transfer fee. Virgil van Dijk remains a key option when fit, while Jérémy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are also regarded as important parts of the club’s defensive plans.
Araújo arrives at Anfield following a difficult period at Barcelona, where he struggled for consistent playing time under manager Hansi Flick and was affected by injuries and a series of costly errors.
He started just 11 La Liga matches last season as his position in Barcelona’s defensive hierarchy weakened.
However, Liverpool are taking a calculated risk on a player who was previously regarded as one of Europe’s leading centre-backs. His physical style and ability to operate at right-back could also make him well suited to the demands of the Premier League.
For Barcelona, the deal provides financial relief, with Liverpool reportedly taking responsibility for Araújo’s wages during the loan period. The move also creates greater flexibility for the Spanish club as it manages its squad and finances.
Barcelona will hope Liverpool exercise the purchase option next summer, while Araújo will have the opportunity to rebuild his confidence and demonstrate his value in a new environment.
The move therefore gives Liverpool defensive cover, provides Barcelona with financial flexibility and offers Araújo a chance to revive his career.
Whether the transfer becomes a permanent deal next summer will depend largely on the defender’s performances during his first season at Anfield.
