Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially presented the staff of office to the newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade. The ceremony, held on Monday at the Exco Chamber of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, marked the formal recognition of the monarch’s reign nearly three years after the passing of his predecessor, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III.
The event took place amidst controversies surrounding the selection of the new Alaafin, announced by the governor last week.
Governor Reaffirms Commitment to Transparency
In his address, Governor Makinde underscored the cultural significance of the Alaafin’s stool, emphasizing its importance not only to Oyo Town and State but to the entire Yoruba race. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to a transparent selection process, distancing himself from any influence on the appointment.
“The Alaafin stool is not for sale, and it is not one to be toyed with,” the governor declared. “I met Prince Owoade for the first time in my life yesterday. I did not know his profile or that of any other contender for the stool because I wanted the process to be unbiased and free of interference.”
Makinde recounted past challenges with traditional institutions in Oyo State, emphasizing that political considerations never influenced his decisions regarding royal appointments. He also warned against attempts to destabilize the traditional institution, pledging to prosecute those who engaged in financial misconduct during the selection process unless pardoned by the new monarch.
Governor’s Message to the New Alaafin
Congratulating Oba Owoade, Governor Makinde expressed his hope that the monarch’s reign would bring peace, unity, and progress to Oyo Town, the state, and the Yoruba people worldwide.
“The coronation is scheduled for four weeks from today, but as of now, Oyo has an Alaafin. I pray that your reign will unite the Yoruba race and foster development in Oyoland, Oyo State, and beyond,” Makinde said.
New Alaafin Vows to Foster Development
In his response, Oba Owoade pledged to work diligently for the progress of Oyo Town, Oyo State, and Nigeria at large. He extended gratitude to Governor Makinde, the Oyomesi (kingmakers), and all stakeholders involved in his selection.
“I am deeply honored and committed to the development of my people and our shared heritage,” the new Alaafin stated.
Commendations for Transparent Process
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Demola Ojo, praised the governor’s insistence on following due process, commending all parties involved for ensuring fairness and equity in the selection.
Dignitaries in Attendance
The ceremony was attended by an array of dignitaries, including Deputy Governor Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, and Hon. Rahman Olorunpoto, member representing Oyo East/Oyo West in the House of Assembly.
Others present included Awise Awo Agbaye, Professor Wande Abimbola, and his wife, Iyanifa Ajisebo Abimbola, as well as members of the Oyomesi and other traditional rulers from Oyo Kingdom. Top government officials such as the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo; Chief of Staff Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi; and Head of Service Mrs. Olubunmi Oni also graced the event.
The new Alaafin’s coronation is expected to solidify his place as the 46th custodian of the revered Oyo throne, with high hopes for a reign marked by unity and development.
