MTN Nigeria, the country’s largest telecommunications operator, has officially discontinued its 15GB data bundle following widespread backlash over a steep 200% price increase.
The telco had initially raised the cost of the plan from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000, sparking outrage among subscribers.
15GB Plan Was a Limited-Time Promotional Offer
Introduced as a promotional offer, the 15GB data bundle was designed to support low-income users and enhance internet accessibility.
The plan was only available via the MyMTN app and MTN MoMo (Mobile Money), restricting access to subscribers using these platforms.
However, sources within MTN confirmed to The PUNCH on Thursday that the company could no longer sustain the plan at its original price without jeopardizing its revenue model.
MTN Admits Mistake, Apologizes to Customers
Acknowledging the backlash, an MTN official stated:
“If we continue selling it at that rate, we risk undermining our revenue. We owe our subscribers an apology for the price hike, and we recognize their loyalty. That plan has been removed and is no longer available.”
In an official statement issued on Thursday, MTN admitted the price hike was a misstep and expressed regret over the decision.
“We understand that you’re upset, and we acknowledge your frustration. We know how disappointing it must have been to wake up to a sudden 200% increase in your favorite digital bundle.”
The telco further appealed for forgiveness, urging subscribers not to hold a grudge.
“While we could offer explanations and reasons, we understand that it might not make things better. We admit that this was a mistake.”
“In this season of love, we hope you won’t stay upset with us. Please forgive and forget. You are important to us, and we will continue to show you just how much. Let’s keep this relationship going.”
The move signals MTN’s response to customer concerns, as it seeks to restore trust and maintain its position as Nigeria’s leading telecom provider.
