The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on terrorism-related charges to October 16, pending the submission of a medical report on his health condition.
Justice James Omotosho granted the adjournment after the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) failed to present its report on Kanu’s health status as earlier directed by the court.
At the previous sitting, Justice Omotosho had ordered the President of the NMA to assemble a medical board to assess Kanu’s alleged deteriorating health and determine whether the medical facilities at the Department of State Services (DSS) are adequate for his treatment or if he should be transferred to a private ward at the National Hospital, Abuja.
The court had also instructed that the report should indicate whether Kanu is medically fit to continue standing trial.
During Tuesday’s proceedings, counsel for the Federal Government, Suraj S’aad, informed the court that the medical board had communicated that its report was not yet ready for presentation.
S’aad subsequently requested a one-week adjournment to allow the board conclude its investigation.
With no objection from the defence, Justice Omotosho adjourned the case to October 16, 2025, for the submission of the medical report and continuation of trial.
