The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has refuted claims that its Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Mele Kyari, is set to leave his position. The company’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, dismissed the speculation during a conversation with our correspondent on Friday.
The clarification followed a report by an international newspaper suggesting that Kyari might step down by year-end as part of the company’s ongoing leadership overhaul. The report cited anonymous sources claiming Kyari had confided in associates about his readiness to vacate the role.
Reacting to the speculation, Soneye described the report as baseless and questioned the newspaper’s authority to make such assertions.
“One might wonder if they were the ones who hired Mele Kyari, given their apparent insight into his career plans. Such baseless speculation is not only laughable but also a testament to the lengths some will go to craft immature narratives,” Soneye remarked.
He praised Kyari’s leadership, noting that under his tenure, the NNPC had transitioned from years of financial losses to recording profits. Highlighting the company’s recent achievement of producing 1.8 million barrels of oil per day, Soneye attributed this milestone to Kyari’s efforts.
“Let’s set the record straight: GCEO Mele Kyari is performing exceptionally, steering Nigeria’s energy sector toward unprecedented success. Under his leadership, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has transitioned from years of losses to declaring profits—a historic achievement. Just yesterday, we reached a production milestone of 1.8 million barrels per day, a testament to his unwavering commitment,” Soneye stated.
Soneye also emphasized Kyari’s dedication to advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for the energy sector, describing the rumours of his removal as unfounded.
“Mr. Kyari remains focused on actualizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for progress and development in the sector, ensuring energy security for our nation. So, to address the rumour: it’s as credible as a mirage in the desert,” he added.
The NNPC recently announced key leadership appointments, including Isiyaku Abdullahi as Executive Vice President, Downstream; Udobong Ntia as Executive Vice President, Upstream; and Adedapo Segun as Chief Financial Officer.
