The Global Methane Program Manager of the U.S. State Department, Robert Leahman, alongside a Deloitte team, has met with NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer Mele Kyari at the NNPC Towers in Abuja to bolster efforts toward methane abatement in Nigeria’s energy sector.
The collaboration has led to the launch of a methane abatement pilot project in the Niger Delta, in partnership with U.S. organizations such as Deloitte and the Bureau of Energy Resources. The initiative focuses on establishing emissions baselines, minimizing methane leaks, and promoting sustainable practices across NNPC’s operations.
These efforts are in line with Nigeria’s ambitious target to reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas sector by 60% by 2031 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. The country’s leadership under the Global Methane Pledge highlights its commitment to combating climate change and driving sustainability in the energy sector.
NNPC Ltd. reiterated its dedication to collaborating with international stakeholders to address environmental challenges while advancing operational efficiency and sustainability in the oil and gas industry.
