The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day ahead of the Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21.
Wike also announced a restriction of movement across the FCT from 8:00 p.m. on Friday to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, following approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The minister made the announcement during a special broadcast aired on national television and radio stations on Thursday. The development was further confirmed in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.
Describing the elections as a crucial opportunity for residents to shape the future of the nation’s capital, Wike urged eligible voters to turn out in large numbers to elect chairmen and councillors for the six area councils.
He called on residents to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly during the exercise, stressing the need to respect electoral rules, fellow citizens, and the eventual outcome of the polls.
The minister directed security agencies to ensure strict compliance with the movement restriction, noting that the measures were intended to facilitate smooth participation and maintain order.
Wike also commended President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, describing the move as a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible, transparent elections.
He expressed optimism that the polls would produce capable leaders who would drive development, peace, and prosperity across the Federal Capital Territory.
