The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has cautioned Nigerian youths against resorting to violence, warning that such actions could plunge the country into confusion and instability.
The monarch gave the advice while addressing leaders of the Benin City Christian Community at the climax of their 2026 Universal Week of Prayer, held on Sunday at the palace in Benin City.
Speaking in the Edo language, the revered traditional ruler urged youths in Edo State and across the country to exercise restraint, apply wisdom and preserve their cultural heritage for future generations.
“To all our youths across Edo State, we use this opportunity to plead with you not to use violence to destroy Nigeria and cause confusion in this country. Allow the government in Edo State to work. Support and continue to pray for leaders in this country,” the Oba said.
The warning followed recent media reports on incidents involving students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, in Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
Oba Ewuare II also offered prayers to God and his royal ancestors to strengthen Nigeria’s leaders and grant them divine wisdom in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Reflecting on his nearly 10 years on the throne, the monarch urged Christians across denominations to remain united and support one another’s growth in line with the teachings of Christ.
The Universal Week of Prayer, themed “The Unchangeable God,” featured a goodwill message by Apostle Godspower Ogbonmwan, who reaffirmed the certainty of God’s promises and reminded leaders, regardless of faith, of their responsibilities to the people.
Intercessory prayers were led by the Chairman of the Benin City Christian Community, Apostle Matthew Ogbonmwan, and Reverend Olu Aderibigbe, while the General Secretary, Reverend Theophilus Aibinuomo, moderated the programme, which also included hymns, songs and worship sessions.
