Tributes are still pouring in for former United States President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024. Among the latest is a heartfelt homage from Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who served as military Head of State when Carter first visited Nigeria in 1978.
Reflecting on his friendship with Carter, Obasanjo credited the late US leader with contributing to his survival and expressed deep sorrow over his passing. He described Carter as a steadfast friend of Nigeria and Africa and a champion of fairness and justice on the global stage.
“President Carter made a tremendous contribution to Nigeria-US relations during his presidency,” Obasanjo noted, adding that his legacy will endure as a model of ethical leadership and commitment to humanity.
Carter, the 39th President of the United States, served from 1977 to 1981. After leaving the White House, he dedicated his life to promoting democracy, fighting neglected diseases, and teaching Sunday school.
Born in rural Plains, Georgia, Carter passed away in the same house he and his wife Rosalynn—his partner of 77 years—purchased in 1961. His modest lifestyle and unwavering principles distinguished him in American political history.
While Carter’s integrity and humility inspired many, his legacy starkly contrasts with the controversies that have marred the reputations of other presidents, such as John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump. Even presidents untainted by scandal, like Barack Obama and George W. Bush, shared little of Carter’s austere lifestyle or outspoken advocacy during their post-presidencies.
Barbara Perry, a historian specializing in US presidents, noted Carter’s ethical legacy. “In a political world where ethical standards have often been eroded, Carter’s life serves as a reminder of what public service can aspire to be,” she said.
Carter’s passing marks the end of an era, but his lifelong dedication to justice and service remains an enduring example for future generations.
